About The Tormey Classic
It started 31 years ago when the Tormey brothers got together one afternoon because the wives were at some type of shower. It happened to coincide with St. Patrick’s Day, and we had such a good time we thought, “we should do this every year.” And we did! The next year, we had a whopping two foursomes, (and you can see a copy of a picture from that Second Annual Tormey Classic right here on our website!).
Shortly after starting our family tournament, our father (the real golf enthusiast) passed away. In his honor, we renamed our championship trophy the Bob Tormey Memorial Trophy. Much like the famous Stanley Cup of the National Hockey League (North America’s oldest sports trophy), every winner of the Tormey Classic has their name engraved on the championship trophy. And like the hockey counter part, our trophy grows in size as we add more and more names through the years.
We always thought that one day we would play the Classic in Ireland, but it turned out to be to tough to coordinate for all the family members and friends for one trip. Some of us did, however, make a separate trip to Ireland at the 25th anniversary of the Classic. We’ll try to share some of those pictures with you as well, as they are glorious!
I would like to personally thank all of our friends, family and loved ones who have joined us in our love of golf or sharing of the corn beef and cabbage for St. Patrick’s Day. We look forward to sharing more good times at this 27th anniversary event and for many years to come!
Cheers!
